After a car accident

Once immediate safety is dealt with, clear damage and collection details help arrange the vehicle’s next move.

Deal with immediate danger first

Call 999 for injury or immediate danger. Follow police directions and the Highway Code’s collision guidance. Take photographs only when you can do so safely.

Record the condition for recovery

Photograph the vehicle from safe positions and explain damage to wheels, steering or suspension. Mention missing wheels, deployed airbags, loose bodywork or leaking fluids. A car that starts may still be unsuitable to drive or roll.

Find out who is arranging the movement

Tell DSBM if the police, insurer, repairer or vehicle owner is instructing collection. Confirm any release restrictions and where the vehicle should go. Have the claim or incident reference available if one has been issued.

Agree the price and receiving arrangements

Check who has authorised payment and whether the receiving garage or bodyshop can accept the vehicle. Insurance payment is subject to the policy and authorisation. Ask about any storage or further transport separately before it is arranged.
