A practical sequence for safety, evidence, insurance contact and vehicle recovery after a collision.
First: make the scene safe.
If anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger, use the emergency services. If it is safe to do so, switch off the engine, use hazard lights, keep away from moving traffic and do not stand in a live carriageway.
Record what happened.
Photograph the vehicles, road position, damage, debris and relevant road markings without putting yourself at risk. Exchange the details required for insurance and note any witnesses.
Before the vehicle is moved.
Tell the recovery operator whether wheels are damaged, suspension has collapsed, steering is locked, airbags have deployed or fluids are leaking. A car that looks towable may need skates or a different loading approach.
