Car won’t start?

A few clear observations help explain a starting problem. Here is what to tell DSBM before arranging assistance or recovery.

Describe the sound, not a guessed diagnosis

Does the starter click, turn slowly or turn at its usual speed without the engine starting? Do the dashboard and interior lights come on? Those observations are more useful than assuming the battery is the only cause.

Read the message in front of you

Note any key, immobiliser, battery or gearbox message. Check the owner’s handbook for the exact wording. If the vehicle asks for a particular start procedure, follow its instructions rather than trying random resets.

Think about what happened before it stopped

Was it standing unused, recently repaired or driven with warning lights? Did it stop while travelling or simply fail to start when parked? Tell us about smoke, unusual noises or a fuel problem. Stop repeated starting attempts if it will not start.
